Texas Western Wear Chain Cavender’s Opens First Upstate Store, a 9,772-Square-Foot Shop at Greenville’s Magnolia Park

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Texas-based Western wear retailer Cavender’s Boot City opened its first Upstate store Friday on Greenville’s Woodruff Road, adding another national retail name to one of the region’s busiest shopping corridors.

The store at 1025 Woodruff Road sits in the Magnolia Park Shopping Center, according to the Upstate Business Journal, and was scheduled to open its doors at 9 a.m. Oct. 30, the Post and Courier reported. Greenville Business Magazine, which first reported the chain’s plans in June, put the store’s size at 9,772 square feet. None of the reports identified the landlord, the leasing brokers or the number of employees the store will carry.

The Greenville shop is Cavender’s second location in South Carolina and its first in the Upstate. The company’s other South Carolina store is on the coast in North Myrtle Beach, according to the Post and Courier. The chain was founded in 1965 in Pittsburgh, Texas, by James and Patricia Cavender and has grown to more than 150 stores across the country, the newspaper reported.

The store sells boots, jeans, hats, workwear and other Western apparel for men, women and children. Brands include Ariat, Wrangler and Resistol, along with the retailer’s own labels such as Rockin’ C and JRC & Sons, according to Greenville Business Magazine. Shoppers can also get in-store services including personalized boot fittings, hat shaping and boot stretching, and the Post and Courier reported the store will also handle commercial accounts.

For the Upstate retail market, the opening is another example of a national chain choosing the Woodruff Road corridor for its regional debut. At just under 10,000 square feet, the store is a mid-size box that falls between small in-line shop space and a traditional big-box anchor. The workwear lineup and commercial accounts also give the store a business-facing angle alongside its walk-in apparel trade, a potential fit for a region with a large construction and manufacturing workforce.

Brokers and shopping center owners tracking expansion-minded tenants will want to watch whether Cavender’s adds more Upstate locations. With more than 150 stores nationally and only two in South Carolina, the chain has room to grow in the state, though none of the reports said whether additional stores are planned in the region.
