Michelin-Starred Chef Joe Cash to Open 77-Seat Dootsie’s in Former Red@28th Space in West Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Chef Joe Cash, whose downtown restaurant Scoundrel earned Greenville its only Michelin star, is bringing a second and more casual concept to the Village of West Greenville, putting a renovated Pendleton Street space back into service after its last tenant, a nightclub, closed in 2023.

The new restaurant, Dootsie’s, will occupy 1233 Pendleton St. and is slated to open in early December with 77 seats, according to the Greenville Journal and The Greenville News. The Journal reported the restaurant will serve dinner Tuesday through Saturday, with reservations taken through Resy. The Post and Courier described the concept as less formal than Scoundrel, Cash’s fine-dining restaurant.

The site carries a notable history for the arts district. The space last housed Red at 28th, a nightclub that shut down in 2023 after a fatal shooting prompted the city to revoke its permit, The Post and Courier reported. Before that, the building was home to Mac Arnold’s Plate Full O’ Blues music venue, according to the paper. The Greenville Journal noted the space also previously held LashBar, and The Greenville News reported that an earlier plan to open a concept called Take Care there was shelved.

Named for Cash’s late grandmother, Dootsie’s will focus on pasta, with a glass-enclosed room where noodles are rolled by hand each day, the Journal reported. The interior was designed with Katie Skoloff, founder of In Site Designs, and features multicolored tile floors, terracotta countertops, cream stucco walls and wooden tables made in Greenville, according to the Journal. Robert Yates will serve as chef de cuisine. “Dootsie’s represents the next chapter of my life,” Cash said in a press release cited by all three outlets.

None of the reports disclosed the restaurant’s square footage, the project’s construction cost or the property’s owner. The Post and Courier credited a project photo to The Powerly Group but did not identify the firm’s role in the development.

For brokers, landlords and investors, the deal places a nationally recognized culinary name in a second-generation hospitality space along the Pendleton Street corridor, and it returns a long-troubled storefront in the Village of West Greenville to active use. Chef-driven tenants with Michelin credentials can serve as anchors that draw evening foot traffic to neighboring retail and restaurant space, making the December opening one to watch for owners marketing nearby properties in the district.
